My boyfriend's first day at ft. Jackson is today & I'd love to know someone's firsthand experience. Have you written it all down yet??
I haven’t written it all up yet, and I really, really need to get on it. As soon as I can, aka when this semester is over, I’ll type up my reception, BCT, and AIT experiences for everyone to read.
I went to Fort Jackson. Fort Jackson was okay. The post kind of sucks. Reception is really crappy. Standing in line for an hour and a half for a 7 minute lunch, getting yelled at by the rudest civilians, and getting little to no sleep. e should have his phone at reception. He’ll spend about 5 days at reception and then get shipped to his basic training unit. For the most part, it all depends on what unit he’ll be assigned, which battalion and company. Each Drill Sergeant and Commander run their battalions, companies, and platoons differently, so everyone will have a slightly different experience. My company only had 3 phone calls, the 30 second phone call on the second day, a ten minute one after the end of week 3 (entering white phase), and one at 9pm the night before Family Day… bottom line, we got screwed over on the phone calls compared to most companies and battalions.
The thing about basic is that it’s mostly a mental game. It’s either so boring that you wish you had something to do, or you’re so busy and tired that you just want to relax. For the most part, you’ll always be tired and hungry.
Just you sure you right letters as often as possible!! That was always the best part of the day. They would hand out our mail about 2-3 times a week at final formation before bed. We’d be looking forward to it all day. The worst thing was when I wouldn’t receive a letter. They are definitely moral boosters and help homesickness! Personally, I was very homesick. My parents and friends would send me pictures and stuff. That always helped.
